Frequently asked questions
How much does PayPal charge per transaction?
For US merchants: 3.49% + 49¢ for branded PayPal Checkout (including Guest Checkout and Pay with Venmo), 2.99% + 49¢ for standard credit/debit card processing, 2.29% + 9¢ for QR code payments, 2.99% with no fixed fee for Goods & Services, and 4.99% + 49¢ for Pay Later. International transactions add 1.5%.
How do I calculate PayPal fees on $100?
Through PayPal Checkout: $100 × 0.0349 + $0.49 = $3.98, leaving you $96.02. Via card processing it is $100 × 0.0299 + $0.49 = $3.48, leaving $96.52.
How much should I invoice to receive an exact amount?
Gross up: request = (desired amount + fixed fee) ÷ (1 − rate). To net exactly $100 through PayPal Checkout you would request $104.13. The "I want to receive…" mode does this automatically.
Is PayPal cheaper than Stripe?
For unbranded card processing PayPal is slightly more expensive (2.99% + 49¢ vs Stripe’s 2.9% + 30¢). The branded PayPal button costs more still (3.49% + 49¢) — merchants offer it for conversion, not cost. QR payments (2.29% + 9¢) are cheaper than either.
Does PayPal charge fees to the buyer?
No — for purchases, the merchant pays the fee. Buyers only pay fees in specific cases like currency conversion or peer-to-peer transfers funded by card.
