Frequently asked questions
What are Square’s processing fees?
US rates: online payments cost 3.3% + 30¢ on the free plan and 2.9% + 30¢ on Plus/Premium plans or via the payments API. In-person (tap, dip, swipe) is 2.6% + 15¢ on the free plan (2.5% on Plus, 2.4% on Premium). Manually keyed cards cost 3.5% + 15¢ on every plan.
How much does Square take from a $100 sale?
In person: $2.75, leaving you $97.25. Online on the free plan: $3.60, leaving $96.40. Manually keyed: $3.65, leaving $96.35.
Why is my online rate 3.3% instead of 2.9%?
Square raised free-plan online pricing to 3.3% + 30¢; the 2.9% + 30¢ rate applies on paid plans (Plus/Premium) and API-integrated payments. If you sell mostly online, the plan subscription can pay for itself at moderate volume.
Does Square charge monthly fees?
The base plan is free — you only pay per transaction. Paid plans (Plus, Premium) add features and lower rates. Hardware is a separate one-time cost.
Are Square fees negotiable?
Square offers custom pricing for businesses processing over roughly $250k per year. Below that, the posted rates are what you pay.
